Section Officers and Stenographer Exam

UPSC conducts a Combined Limited Departmental Competitive Examination for the Section Officers Grade and Stenographers Grade B/ Grade I every year.

Candidates who have been admitted to the examination should download their e-Admit Card from http://www.upsc.gov.in/

Paper I

General Studies & General Knowledge of Constitution of India and Machinery of Government

Practice and Procedures in Parliament

Knowledge of the Five Year Plans, Indian Economy and major Developmental Schemes

Current affairs both national and international

Rules of procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

Paper II

Procedure and Practice in the Govt. of India Secretariat and attached offices

Detailed knowledge of General Financial and Service Rules – Conduct Rules, Leave Rules, TA Rules etc. duly taking into account the requirement of relevant categories of services

Noting, Drafting and Précis Writing

Candidates are required to prepare notes and drafts on specific problems and précis from a passage.

Shorthand Test in Hindi or English

The qualifying shorthand test in English/Hindi will be a dictation test at the speed of 100 words per minute of ten minutes which the candidate will be required to transcribe in 40/55 minutes. This test is required only for Candidates competing in Categories IV, V, VI, VII and IX.

Part II of examination:

Evaluation of record of service carrying a maximum of 100 marks

Only candidates who have scored minimum qualifying marks in the written examination and Shorthand Test (if taken) will be considered.

Marks obtained in evaluation of record of service will be counted for ranking

Some Important Instructions in Written Examination

  1. Please bring your official Identity Card along with e-Admit Card (and print out of Important Instructions) to the examination hall in all the sessions.
  2. Please use only Black Ball Pen to mark OMR Sheet/Answer Sheet (objective papers). Marking other than those made by Black Ball Pen will not be evaluated.
  3. Please do not take mobile phones/pagers/Bluetooth/IT gadgets to the Examination Hall. They are strictly not permitted inside the examination hall and also the Commission will not take responsibility for safekeeping of these items.
  4. There will be penalty (negative marking) for wrong answers marked by you in the objective type question papers.
  5. You will not be allowed to go to the toilet during the last 30 minutes of Examination in each session.
