There are 4 medical councils in India that govern the Medical profession:-

  • Medical Council of India (MCI)
  • Dental Council of India (DCI)
  • Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)

After completion of 12th/SLC, students needs to join in undergraduate courses in medical colleges to become a medical profession. After successful completion of undergraduate, they have to join postgraduates  in some specailized subject to become a physician or surgeon.

Undergraduate courses in Medical Profession:

  1. B. B. S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

Course Duration – 5 ½ years

No. Of Semesters: 3

Subjects: General medicine, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat), Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, and Orthopaedics. The last 1 year is devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

2. D. S. (Bachelor of Dental Sciences)

Course Duration – 4 years

Subjects – Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Microbiology. Specialization in dentistry and hands-on-practice are during the two final semesters. The last 1 year is devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

3. H. M. S. (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine & Surgery)

Course Duration – 5 ½ years

The Homoeopathic Education in India is presently monitored by the National Institute of Homoeopathy.

4. A. M. S. (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)

Course Duration – 5 ½ years

The Ayurvedic Education in India is presently being monitored by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM).

5. U. M. S. (Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery)

Course Duration – 5 ½ years

No. Of Semesters: 3

An undergraduate degree course in Unani Medicine & Surgery. The Unani Education in India is being monitored by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). The last 1 year is devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

6. V. Sc. & A. H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry)

Course Duration – 5 ½ years

An undergraduate degree course in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. The Veterinary education in India is being monitored by the Veterinary Council of India.

7. Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy)

Course Duration – 4 years

The course prepares eligible professionals for pharmaceutical industry. The Pharmacy education in India is being monitored by the Pharmacy Council of India.

8. BSc. – Nursing (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)

Course Duration – 3 to 4 years

Specialization – Operation Theatre, Cardiac Care and Surgery.

9. P. T. (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)

Course Duration – 4 ½ years

This is the course about the scientific procedures used in the treatment of a patient with disability, disease or injury to achieve and maintain functional rehabilitation. The last 6 months is devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

10. O. T. (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy)

Course Duration – 4 ½ years

An undergraduate degree course in occupational therapy. The programme prepares professional therapists who help people with physical or mental disabilities in achieving maximum functioning and independence at home and at the workplace. The last 6 months is devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

11. M. L. T. (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology)

Course Duration – 4 years

An undergraduate degree course in medical laboratory technology. The degree awarded is B.Sc.-M.L.T. These professionals get involved in the functioning of Biochemical Laboratories.

Medical Postgraduate Courses:

  1. M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)

Course Duration – 3 years

This is a postgraduate degree in medicine. Doctors have M.B.B.S. degree are eligible to do the Doctor of Medicine (MD) course. This program is a specialized program in general medicine.

2. M.S. (Master of Surgery)

Course Duration – 3 years

This is a postgraduate degree in surgery. Doctors have M.B.B.S. degree are eligible to do M.S. A doctor after successful completion of this course is eligible to work as Surgeon.

Postgraduate Diploma:

Course Duration – 2 to 3 years

This is a postgraduate diploma program in medicine for MBBS degree holders. The duration of the program varies from 2 to 3 years based on the speciality.

Super Specialty Courses:

  1. DM / MCh

Course Duration – 2 to 3 years

DM is a super specialty program in medicine of 2 to 3 years duration. The entry requirement for this course is MD (Doctor of Medicine)

M.Ch is a 2 years super specialty program in surgery. The entry requirement for this course is MS (Master of Surgery)
