Bomb explosion in Lahore park carried outby Taliban faction

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a Taliban splinter group, claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack targeting Pakistani Christians in Lahore on Easter Sunday. 65 people were killed and more than 300 were wounded in the attack.

Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the faction said “The target was Christians. We want to send this message to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that we have entered Lahore. He can do what he wants but he won’t be able to stop us. Our suicide bombers will continue these attacks.”

Afghanistan attack: 8 policemen killed

The Taliban attacked two police checkpoints in the south Afghanistan that killed at least eight policemen, an afghan official said.

Col. Almas Kahn, deputy police chief in Helmand province, confirmed that the attack happened in the Gereshk district on Sunday.


Jaitley gives stern warning to defaulters – pay up or face action

In the wake of the Vijay Mallya defaulting scandal, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley warned defaulters to pay the dues to banks or face “coercive action”.

He further said that to recover the dues over 9000 crores from Vijay Mallya, banks have certain collaterals of group companies of Vijay Mallya and will take legal action accordingly.

Uttarakhand under President’s Rule

In the wake of constitutional breakdown under Article 356 of Constitution, President Pranab Mukherjee has imposed Present’s Rule in the state of Uttarakhand.

The Congress Government in Uttarakhand, headed by Chief Minister Harish Rawat has now ceased to function and the state Assembly has been suspended.

Team of 14 IAF pilots create new national record

Pilots from Indian Air Force have broken the existing national record by flying 10,000 km in an open cockpit. They flew unprotected from weather changes and other natural elements across mountains, coasts, forests and desert.

The IAF expedition named ‘Pradakshina’ set out on a 10,000-km-long flight starting from Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengalon February 1. They returned to a euphoric welcome on March 26.

Wg. Cdr. M.P.S. Solanki led the team that surpassed the existing national record of 9,132 km.


Drones to be deployed to study crop loss

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is planning to assess the quality of soil as well as crop losses after floodsby deploying sensors and drones in farms, to begin with.

Director General of ICAR T. Mohapatra said the drones would help speed up the analysis. At present, unless large areas get affected farmers do not get compensation, he added.

CERN on the verge of a massive discovery

Physicists from the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN are really pumped up about two major experiments on the verge of massive discovery.

The experiments are the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment and the ATLAS experiment, of CERN, both of which smash together high energy proton beams probing into particle physics by studying the output of these collisions.

CERN is based in Geneva.

Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch: 3 new variants launched

Samsung has launched three new variants of the Gear S2 smartwatch along with new set of applications and dial faces for the Indian market.

The smartwatches will be available across all Samsung retail channels and priced at Rs.24,300 for the Gear S2 white and Rs.34,900 for the Gear S2 Classic gold and platinum variants.

“The introduction of these new Gear S2 variants with additional apps and watch faces will further add to the style and convenience quotient,” Manu Sharma, director, mobile business, Samsung India Electronics, said in a statement.Samsung is headquartered in South Korea.

India is warming up to Podcasts,the new radio of the era, which are stories in digital audio format dealing with a wide range of topics.

“All media has evolved into an on-demand model — take Netflix and Kindle. The audio industry is no different and people are slowly beginning to shift their listening habits,” explains Amit Doshi, founder of the podcast network Indus Vox Media.

Rupee up 7 paise vs dollar – extends gains for 2nd day

The rupee moved up by 7 paise to close at 66.57 a dollar extending its gains for the second day on Monday against the U.S. Dollar.

The rupee resumed sharply lower at 66.90 per dollar as against last Wednesday’s closing level of 66.64 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market here.

On Monday, Wipro announced a five-year partnership with India’s leading food service company Jubilant FoodWorks to deliver energy management services and help reduce energy and operational costs.

The EcoEnergy business of Wipro rolled out its multi-year Managed Restaurant Energy Services (MRES) programme in 2015 which ensures effective sustenance of energy cost reduction, Wipro said.

Government to infuse additional Rs. 5,050 crore in PSU banks shortly

The government is likely to infuse additional capital of about Rs. 5,050 crore in some public sector banks this week.

This will be part of the Rs. 25,000 crore capital infusion plan earmarked for the current fiscal.

Parliament has already approved Rs. 5,050 crore to meet additional expenditure on recapitalisation of public sector banks in March.

EgyptAir plane hijacked: Hijacker arrested, passengers and crew safe

An Egyptian man hijacked an EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo and forced to land in Cyprus on Tuesday. However the crew and passengers were freed unharmed. The hijacker gave himself up and was arrested by Cyprus officials.

Day after intruder is shot, Capitol bounces back to normalcy

The U.S. Capitol complex returned normal Tuesday, a day after a man pulled a weapon at a security checkpoint as he entered the underground Capitol Visitor Centre. Officers shot and wounded the man before he could cause any damage.

The man was identified as Larry R. Dawson of Tennessee. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed.

Flights across Alaska cancelled – volcano ash cloud covers 400 miles

On Sunday about 4 pm, a volcano erupted in Alaska spitting ash cloud to 20,000 feet grounding all flights over Alaska.

ThePavlof Volcano, lies 625 miles southwest of Anchorage on the Alaska Peninsula and is one of Alaska’s most active volcanoes.

Fayal C., a man charged in connection with last week’s horrific Brussels bombings, was released by the Belgian officials saying they did not have enough information to justify keep him under arrest.

The home of the accused had been searched but no weapons or explosives were found.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had made the recommendation in April 2015, which was approved by the Telecom Commission on Monday.

The Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality has confirmed a total of 58 cases of the Zika virus infection in the country. Amongst the infected, nine are pregnant women.

All of the cases have been brought in by people who were infected while visiting countries where the virus is prevalent.

Ayatollah Khamenei says missiles are key to Iran’s future

Universal flu shot soon to protect against multiple H1N1 strains

In a major progress towards an all-purpose or universal flu shot which would protect people against all strains of the H1N1 virus, researchers have now developed a new vaccine that will protect against multiple strains of seasonal and pandemic H1N1 influenza, in clinical experiments on mice.

“One of the problems with current influenza vaccines is that we have to make predictions about which virus strains will be most prevalent every year and build our vaccines around those predictions,” said one of the researchers Ted Ross from the University of Georgia in the US.


Chhattisgarh blast by Maoists kills Seven CRPF men

On Wednesday, an explosion triggered by Maoists in Dantewada district of south Chhattisgarh, killed Seven Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Jawans.

“A vehicle of the CRPF’s 230th battalion was blown up by the Maoists near Malewara market on Dantewada-Sukma road at around 3 p.m. today. Seven CRPF jawans were killed in the blast,” Dinesh Pratap Upadhyay, Deputy Inspector General of the CRPF, Dantewada range told The Hindu.

According to officials it was an IED (Improvised Explosives Device) blast.

Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila acquitted in suicide attempt case in 2006

Manipuri rights activist Irom Sharmila was acquitted by a Delhi court on Wednesday in a case of attempt to suicide when she was observing a fast unto death at Jantar Mantar in 2006.

Delhi Magistrate Harvinder Singh let off 42-year- old Irom, who for the past 16 years has been on a fast demanding repeal of AFSPA in Manipur. She was put on trial on March 4, 2013, for attempt to suicide while undertaking fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar on October 4, 2006.

Bhaichung Bhutia declares over Rs. 17 crore in assets

Tata Steel puts entire UK business up for sale

Tata Steel, Britain’s largest steelmaker, after about a decade long business in the steel industry, put its entire UK business up for sale to stem heavy losses.

The steel giant said the financial performance of its UK arm had plummeted sharply in recent months, following years of weak conditions forcing shedding of hundreds of jobs.

Tata Steel blamed high manufacturing costs, domestic market weakness and increased imports into Europe from countries like China. It employs about 15,000 people and includes Port Talbot, Britain’s largest steel plant.

Rupee ends at 3-month high against dollar with a gain of 17 paise

The rupee surged by 17 paise to close at three-month high of 66.37 per dollar on sustained selling of dollars by banks and exporters amid firm stock markets.

A forex dealer said that a weak dollar in overseas market in view of the Federal Reserve’s cautious stance on interest rate strengthened the rupee value.
