Obama and Xi Jinping of China vow to sign Paris accord
U.S. President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping of China announced that they would sign the Paris Agreement on climate change on the first day the UN accord will be open for government signatures, which is April 22.
Officials felt this is because of a joint resolve by USA and China – the world’s two largest greenhouse gas polluters to address climate change; although it is doubtful whether USA will meet its obligations under the agreement.
USA and Saudi Arabia announce anti-terror drive
Saudi Arabia and the U.S have announced joint action against two groups and four individuals for promoting or supporting terrorism.
These groups and individuals are suspected of supporting Al-Qaida, Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba that also target India and have been put under sanctions. Citizens and Organisations in USA and Saudi Arabia are barred from dealing with them.
This announcement comes just a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Saudi Arabia for his first visit.
North Korea will pursue nuclear tests and missile launching
In defiance of the United States and its allies, a top Pyongyang envoy said on Friday that North Korea will continue to pursue its nuclear and ballistic missile programme, adding that a state of “semi-war” now existed between the two Korean countries.
North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, So Se Pyong, criticized the huge joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises taking place which he said were aimed at “decapitation of the supreme leadership of the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea]” and conquering Pyongyang.
Indian Govt. avoids mentioning Masood Azhar’s role in Pathankot
The Indian government refrained from mentioning the name of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar for the attacks, in the first official briefing after the Pakistani SIT team concluded its visit to the Pathankot airbase.
National Investigation Agency (NIA) D-G Sharad Kumar, who was asked to read out a statement on the visit on Friday, did not mention the name of either Azhar or his brother Abdul Rauf Asghar and referred them as “office bearers” instead.
Quraishi says Coterminous Lok Sabha and State polls not feasible
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suggestion of making Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls coterminous at a meeting of the BJP office bearers in March, has set off a national debate on its feasibility and issues of practical implementation.
Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi told The Hindu, that Mr. Modi’s concerns regarding monetary expenditure on polls every year before every election were valid. “Having said that, constitutionally, it will be impossible to implement”.
Gmail’s April Fool’s day joke a damp squib
Google has removed an April Fool’s Gmail button near the usual send button, which sent a comical animation to recipients, after several people complained about its nuisance factor.
The button appeared beside Gmail’s normal send button and allowed users to shut down an email thread by sending a GIF of a Minion dropping a microphone.
However, several people complained of using the new button by mistake thereby losing important mail threads and causing damage to their office work.
Goyal unveils an app to monitor demand and supply of power in real-time
Power Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled an app that provides real-time information on price, demand, and supply of electricity across India, State wise.
Goyal put the responsibility on the state governments to ensure the accuracy of the data in such apps.
Saina Nehwal to playagainst Li Xuerui in semifinals
Saina Nehwal scraped through against Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun for a berth in the semifinals of the $300,000 India Open in the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium, New Delhi. This is Saina’s sixth victory over Sung Ji Hyun in seven encounters.
Saina, defending champion and second seed, overcame the loss of the first game to win 19-21, 21-14, 21-19. “I have always beaten her with ease but today she played much better. I never expected her to rally so much,” was what the Indian said after the match.
She will now take on Olympic Champion Li Xuerui of China in Semi Finals.
Tenure of Ravi Shastri and support staff ends
Ravi Shastri’s post as Team Director of the Indian team and Assistant Coaches Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R. Sridhar’s tenures came to end following India’s defeat against the West Indies in the semifinal of ICC World Twenty20 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
They were appointed from the one-day series in England in September 2014.

Cigarette makers threaten to halt production over ambiguity of policy
Top tobacco manufacturers of India have threatened to halt production citing “ambiguity” over the government’s policy on size of pictorial health warnings to be displayed on tobacco packs.
The Tobacco Institute of India (TII), said in a statement that they have “unanimously decided to shut all their cigarette factories with effect from April 1 owing to ambiguity on the policy related to revision of Graphic Health Warnings on tobacco product packs.”

Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeted on Thursday that the company has added more countries to the pre-order page for Tesla Model 3. The list of countries includes India, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Paris climate pact: Javadekar announces India will ratify pact on April 22
Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar on Saturday said India would ratify the COP 21 Global Climate Agreement on April 22, along with 100 other nations at a high level signing ceremony to be convened at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Mr. Javadekar pointed out that while India accounted for only 3 per cent carbon emission, the cumulative US contribution was 30 per cent; Europe Canada and other developed world contributed 50 per cent.
Declaration form for Urdu writers
A new declaration form introduced by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) insists that writers, who seek monetary support, should declare that the book “does not contain anything which goes against the policies of the Indian government.”
Writers and artists held a demonstration on Saturday in Bengaluru in front of Town Hall, protesting this new declaration saying it would run counter to the rights of writers/artists to be critical of the government or the state.

Consider local steel firms in government contracts: Britain
The British government is looking for ways to tackle the crisis and support domestic steel producers after Tata Steel of India put its loss-making British plant up for sale on Wednesday. This has put thousands of jobs at risk.
The suggestion is that infrastructure and other government contracts involving steel supplies must look at local UK steel producers also in order address this issue on a long term basis.
Syrian troops and allies move forward: take another IS-controlled town
Syrian troops and their allies on Sunday captured another town controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group in central Syria, state media reported. This is just a week after Syrian troops took back the historic town of Palmyra from IS.
The town of Qaryatainlies midway between Palmyra and the capital, Damascus and is strategically important. The push into Qaryatain took place under the cover of Russian airstrikes and is hailed as another setback to the IS extremists in Syria.
US-India Defence ties strengthened: New Act in U.S. Congress
The US-India Defence Technology and Partnership Act, which was introduced in the U.S. Congress two weeks back, would “institutionalise” the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) framework between the two countries and the India-specific cell in the Pentagon, a senior U.S. defence official said.
The India Rapid Reaction Cell is specifically mentioned in the U.S.-India Defence Technology and Partnership Act.
Khaleda Zia to surrender before court on April 5
Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has agreed to surrender before a court in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, and seek bail in a case against her for masterminding a deadly petrol bomb attack on a bus during an anti-government protest in 2015, that killed 1 and injured 30 people.
“Khaleda will surrender before the Court of Metropolitan Sessions Judge on April 5,” Sanaullah Mia, one of her lawyers, told reporters in Dhaka.
New Security measures: ATMs not to be replenished with cash after 8 p.m.
The Home Ministry has proposed that ATMs should not be replenished with cash after 8 p.m. in cities to prevent incidents of attack on cash carrying vans.
The other proposed Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) are that the private cash transportation agencies must collect money from the banks in the first half of the day. In rural areas, the deadline will be 5 p.m. Additionally, the cash vans that are fitted with CCTVs and GPS must not carry more than Rs. 5 crore per trip.
Modi assures Saudi business leaders of common indirect taxation
Speaking to business leaders in Saudi capital Riyadh on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised streamlinedbusiness environment for global investors.
The Prime Minister said a common indirect taxation regime in form of GST (Goods and Services Tax) was “about to happen.” He, however did not commit to any timeframe. GST will do away with myriad tax compliance issues and ensure better tax governance in India.
Four Indians with suspected IS links released by Syria
India secured the release of four citizens from Syria who were held in a government prison in Damascuson suspicion of collusion with the Islamic State (IS), almost two and half months after it was revealed to Indian officials about the citizens’ imprisonment.
“We have secured release of four Indians from Syria. Welcome home Arun Kumar Saini, Sarvjit Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Joga Singh,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.
New planet with triple-star system discovered at US Astrophysics centre
Scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysicshave discovered a rare triple-star system with a gas giant planet comparable to Jupiter.
Researchers have found that a binary system once thought to be a single star was actually a pair of stars orbiting one another, and was a part of the triple-star system.
Ramanujan encyclopedia launched
An encyclopedia of Srinivasa Ramanujan will be launched by Springer. This was announced at an international conference of mathematics held at the University of Florida held recently.
“The comprehensive encyclopedia of about 1000 pages, in two volumes, will contain everything important about Ramanujan’s life and mathematics,” said Mr. Marc Strauss during his announcement at the recently held International Conference on Number Theory at the University of Florida.
Enzyme produced with Directed Evolution to slice HIV virus
A German team has been able to cut or slice off an important portion of the genetic material of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causing deadly AIDS.
This breakthrough has come after a decade of attempts by this team of researchers from Dresden and Hamburg, to evolve an enzyme that can identify HIV gene code and slice it. This enzyme is expected to have a huge potential to cure AIDS.

Reserve Bank of India– stage set to cut rate by 25 bps
With the Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan setting the conditions for further easing of the monetary policy met, the market participants have said that the stage is set for at least a 25 bps reduction in interest rate in the first bi-monthly review of monetary policy scheduled on April 5.
India’s gross fiscal deficit expected to exceed target
India’s gross fiscal deficit for 2015-2016 could be 6.9 per cent of GDP, wider than the budget estimate of 6.3 per cent, according to an analysis.
According to Thomas Richardson, Senior Resident Representative for India, Nepal and Bhutan, at 6-7 per cent of GDP, India’s General Government fiscal deficit is well above the norm for most emerging markets and in the worry zone.

U.S. Blackstone to buy control of Mphasis
U.S.private equity firm Blackstone has agreed to buy control of Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) majority shareholding in Bengaluru-based IT services provider Mphasis Ltd.
The deal is worth up to Rs.7,071 crore. The transaction will be Blackstone’s single largest investment in the country, with it acquiring at least 84 per cent of the 60.5 per cent stake owned by HPE and make an open offer for buying another 26 per cent from the public.
Government lowers freight target for ports
With the ports missing out on cargo targets for 2015-2016 because of European economic crisis, ban on export of iron ore by some statesamongst other reasons, government has lowered freight targets for ports.
The government has scaled down the freight handling target of major ports for the year 2016-17 to 644 million tonnes, lower by nearly 51 million tonnes from the 695 million tonnes fixed for 2015-16.

Khaleda gets bail in sedition case
Khaleda Zia, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister, managed to secure bail in a total of five cases, including a sedition case, after she surrendered before separate courts in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The court had earlier issued arrest warrants against Ms. Khaleda and 27 others and directed the police to submit reports by April 27 on the execution of arrest warrants.
Panama Papers: Iceland’s Prime Minister resigns
Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned in the capital Reykjavik, on Tuesday, because of outrage over leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca implicating Gunnlaugsson and his wife.

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, in a statement released on Tuesday, denied any connection to the companies leaked in Panama Papers. It was reported that Bachchan and his daughter-in-law were linked to companies in the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands.
“I do not know any of the companies referred to by Indian Express… . I have never been a director of any of the companies. It is possible that my name has been misused,” Mr. Bachchan said in his statement on Tuesday..”

Officials detained a 34-year-old man from Bhatkal in Karnataka at the Pune airport on Tuesday just before he was to board a flight to Dubai for onward journey to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist outfit.
The man identified as Ismail Musab Raoof Ahmed, is a resident of Bhatkal in north Karnataka. He was planning to board an Air India flight to Dubai, when he was detained by intelligence officials at the Pune airport.

The MeT department’s prediction of extreme, and extended, heat wave-like conditions this summer seems to be coming true with the temperature in the last three days being significantly above normal in most parts of India.
The maximum temperatures have been between five to six degree Celsius higher than normal, in parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, eastern Rajasthan and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. The minimum temperature is more than 5 degree normal in these places.

According to a new studyin Taiwan, people with Type 1 diabetes have a three-time increased risk of developing epilepsy later in life.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common autoimmune disorders in children. Immune abnormalities, brain lesions, genetic factors and metabolic abnormalities are all potential causes for the link between Type 1 diabetes and epilepsy, the researchers have said.

The Sensex lost 2 per cent to close at 24,883.59. The broader Nifty settled below the 7,700 mark at 7,603.20, down 155.60 points or 2.01 per cent.

U.N. defends response to terrorism in wake of criticism by Modi
In a scathing attack on UN sluggishness to tackle terrorism, Indian Prime Minister Modi had addressed a gathering of Indian diaspora in Brussels, and said that the U.N. has all means and mechanism to deal with war but does not know what the definition of terrorism is and how to address it.
In its defence, Deputy Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Farhan Haq, said, “We certainly are trying to take a responsible attitude in terms of dealing with terrorism and the spectre of terrorism worldwide…The UN encourages international solidarity against terrorism in all its aspects, whether it is terrorist bombings or terrorist financing,” .
Litigation challenging Bihar’s total ban on alcohol filed
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed today in the Patna High Court challenging the Bihar government’s decision on imposing complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol in the state.
The PIL was filed a day after the Nitish Kumar ministry declared Bihar a total dry state, by an ex-serviceman A. N. Singh.
Virbhadra taken to task over not joining CBI investigation
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday questioned Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh about why he had not joined the CBI investigation in a disproportionate assets case registered against him.
The court made it clear that the Chief Minister had to join the probe even according to an order of his Himachal Pradesh’s High Court.“Your name is there in the FIR? Why don’t you join the investigation? What is the issue [involved] in this?” demanded Justice Pratibha Rani.
Army to try out psychological test in new recruitment system
The Army for the first timewill try out a psychological test for candidates to non-officer positions. The new test will be included from June in the selection system.
This test is not across the country and will be carried out only on a trial basis.
Manas Kumar Mandal, Director-General (Life Sciences) at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), linked the changes at least in part to his organisation’s efforts to reduce fratricide and suicide within the forces.
China successful in launching retrievable satellite
On Wednesday, China launched a retrievable scientific research satellite from its launch centre at Gobi desert.
The main aim of the launch was to aid scientists to study microgravity and space life science.
The satellite SJ-10 was put into orbit by Long March 2-D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Gobi desert in north-west China.
WhatsApp rolls out end-to-end encryption
WhatsApp has rolled out end-to-end encryption meaning that all the communication between WhatsApp users is private and secure and accessible only by the sender and receiver.
The following was posted by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, founders WhatsApp in their blog: “When you send a message, the only person who can read it is the person or group chat that you send that message to. No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not oppressive regimes. Not even us.”
This encryption is on by default for all users.
Sharp increase in number of diabetics, underweight in India, says report
The absolute number of adults with diabetes in India increased from 11.9 million in 1980 to 64.5 million in 2014, notes a paper published today (April 6) in The Lancet.
With 0.1 million, Indian women were ranked 35th in the severely obese category in 1975 but shot up to 8th position in 2014 with 3.7 million severely obese women.
Ironically, India also ranks number one in the case of underweight adults with 101.8 million men in 2014 compared to 61.4 million in 1975.
The paper is based on data from 751 studies totaling 4.4 million adults from 200 countries.

Hector Beverages, the makers of traditional Indian beverages under Paper Boat brand, will invest Rs.67 crore in expanding its operations in Karnataka, a top official said.
“Our R&D team is working on developing 35 to 40 products,”Neeraj Kakkar, Co-Founder and CEO, Hector Beverages, said. The company has been selling eight million units per month with the top seven cities accounting for 80 per cent of sales.

Secular law student murdered in Dhaka
A Bangladeshi law student, who expressed his views against religious extremism on his Facebook page, was brutally murdered in capital Dhaka on Wednesday.
The victim, Nazimuddin Samad (26) was hacked by a machete and then shot in the head with a pistol.
Since February 2015 at least five writers, bloggers and publishers have been killed in Bangladesh; with no visible action taken against the perpetrators.

In her newly created job as state counselor, Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi has declared release of political prisoners as her first act.
The statement was posted on the Facebook page of the office of President Htin Kyaw. The release could begin as soon as next week to coincide with Myanmar’s traditional New Year festival.
Six Taliban militants killed in Lahore
Pakistani security forces have killed six Taliban militants who were suspected of planning a major terror strike on government offices in an encounter on the outskirts of Lahore.
The Intelligence agencies were tipped off about the presence of around 10 suspected terrorists belonging to the banned Tahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) splinter group Ustad Aslam.
A jolt to Modi’s bold initiative to have closer ties with Pakistan
In a disturbing development, Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit’s announcement that “the peace process with India had been suspended”, could damage the bold initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have closer ties with Islamabad in December 2015.
Mr. Basit’s announcement, which comes right after the visit of JIT to India, also casts a shadow on future cooperation between the India and Pakistan to nab the perpetrators of the Pathankot attack.

Annual fee for UG courses at IITs hiked
The annual fee for The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) undergraduate degree has been more than doubled by Central government.
The annual tuition fees for undergraduate courses will now be Rs. 2 lakh, which was Rs. 90,000 till date. There will however, be a total fee waiver for the differently abled and students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and weaker sections.
Mayawatisays Stand Up India an ‘eyewash’
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati criticized the ‘Stand Up India’ scheme and said it was an eyewash with no serious purpose other than to get Dalit votes in the next Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
“All that is happening smacks of political agenda as there is no serious will to improve the lot of the Dalits and the downtrodden,” said the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister.
Google to test robot cars in Phoenix, Arizona
Alphabet Inc. is going to test its self-driving cars in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area, the company said on Thursday.Phoenix will be the fourth U.S. city to serve as a proving ground for robot cars developed by the company.
Alphabet’s Google unit has been conducting driverless vehicle testing for six years in Mountain View, California and expanded the testing to Austin, Texas last summer.
FB, Twitter, Google asked to set up India servers
The Union Home Ministry has requested social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Google to maintain servers in India to help get real time information about accounts that cause mischief and incite unrest in the public.
Case in point is information on a fake Twitter handle of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed (@HafeezSaeedJUD), that the Government is yet to receive from Twitter.

Labour Ministry proposes Rs.10,000 minimum monthly wage for contract workers
The Labour Ministry has proposed a minimum monthly income of Rs.10,000 for contract workers which is around Rs.6,000 per month at present.
As per the Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Central Rules, 1971, the wages of the contract labour shall be according to the minimum wage prescribed under Minimum Wages Act, 1948 and it should be at par with the regular workers in cases where the contract worker perform the same kind of work as the former.
Layoffs at well-known mobile ad start-up InMobi
InMobi, the Bangalore based startup in data-driven mobile advertising is laying off nearly 10 per cent of its staff to survive cut-throat competition from the giants like Google and Facebook. About 100 people will face the axe out of 1000 employees.
“They (InMobi) had high hopes from their products, but they are not meeting their revenue targets and the burn rates are not coming down,” said a person with direct knowledge of the layoffs at the company.
Jaitley to discuss impasse over GST Bill with Congress
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be meeting the Congress Party leaders again to discuss and facilitate the passage of the GST Constitutional Amendment Bill (GST Bill) in the latter half of the Budget Session but he sounded concerned about the Rajya Sabha’s (RS) ability to stymie it.
The Bill is now stuck in the Rajya Sabha. It was passed by the Lok Sabha in May 2015.
