Twin Quakes in Japan – at least 29 killed, 1000 injured
Two powerful earthquakes a day apart shook south-western Japan’s Kumamoto area, killing at least 29 people, trapping many others beneath flattened homes and rendering thousands of residents homeless.
Saturday’s magnitude-7.3 quake shook the Kumamoto region killing 19 on Kyushu, where Thursday’s 6.5-magnitude quake claimed 10.
About 1000 people were injured, several houses leveled and many left with no power.
Tornado kills 4 people, injures 7 in Uruguay
A powerful tornado swept over a small city called Dolores in Uruguay about 165 miles (265 kilometres) west of capital city Montevideo, on Friday. The tornado ripped up houses, hurled cars into the air and killed at least four people, authorities said. Seven others were seriously injured.
Mr. Roballo, an official with the Uruguayan president’s office, said many residents had lost their homes and at least two children were seriously hurt and had been transferred to the capital for treatment.
Earthquake measuring 6.2 on Richter scale strikes Guatemala
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck an area off the Pacific coast of Guatemala on Friday just after 8 a.m. local time.
There are no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The quake was centred about 60 miles off the coast of the Central American country.
Man erases all company data after typing wrong command
In a very unfortunate incident, a man deleted his entire company and the websites of his clients by mistake after executing a wrong lineof command on his computer server.
Marco Marsala ran a web hosting company with over 1535 customers, looking after the servers and internet connections on which the files for websites are stored.
The code, “rm -rf”, deleted everything and blocked the helpful warnings that usually inform the user that something is being deleted. Since he hadn’t specified what he wanted deleted, it erased everything by default, The Independent reported without mentioning where the company is based.
External Affairs Ministry suspends Mallya’s diplomatic passport
Based on a request from the Enforcement Directorate made a few days ago,the Ministry of External Affairs suspended liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s diplomatic passport.
The request was in connection with a money laundering probe in the over Rs. 900 crore IDBI Bank loan fraud case involving Mallya. The ministryhas also threatened to revoke his passport if he doesn’t appear before the Indian High Commission in London within a week.
BRICS discusses establishing bank institute, rating agency
BRICS countries on Friday discussed the efficacy of “establishing” a bank institute and a rating agency of their own following the New Development Bank (NDB) being operational.
BRICS comprises five emerging economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.The NDB which commenced operations in July, 2015, is headquartered in Shanghai and its initial authorised capital is USD 100 billion.
Access to justice for every part of the country: ‘Supreme Court located too far North’
A historic debate on whether National Courts of Appeal should be established in the four corners of the country through an amendment to the Constitution will be coming up soon.
One of the reasons cited is that the Supreme Court is too far North in Delhi for litigants from southern states to get timely and affordable justice.
Jupiter’s 6thmoon Europa has enough heat to support ocean: study
Jupiter exerts a strong gravitational pull on its moon Europa, creating far more heat on the moon’s ice-sheet than what was assumed earlier, and a new study suggests this heat may be enough to support a sub-surface ocean.
As Europa orbits Jupiter, its icy surface heaves and falls with the pull of Jupiter’s gravity, creating enough heat, to support an ocean beneath the moon’s solid shell, researchers said.
Supernova iron discovered on Moon
Physicists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany have succeeded in demonstrating an unusually high concentration of radioactive 60Fe isotope — created almost exclusively in supernova explosions — in lunar ground samples.
The samples were gathered between 1969 and 1972 during Apollo lunar missions 12, 15 and 16 which brought the lunar material back to earth.
Azlan Shah Cup 2016: India in the finals!
India outplayed host Malaysia 6-1 in a must-win match, and ensured its seventh appearance in the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament, in Ipoh on Friday.
India will now face World champions Australia in the finals, which beat 3-0 over Canada to get to the finals without losing a single match.
IPL2016: Delhi Daredevils defeat Kings XI Punjab
In a brilliant bowling spell of Daredevil’s leg spinner Amit Mishra, Kings XI could only manage 111 for nine in 20 overs in New Delhi. Mishra’s 4 for 11 in 3 overs was the main reason the Daredevils could contain Kings XI to a paltry score.
The host could easily reach the target with eight wickets and 6.3 overs to spare.
IPL final likely in Bengaluru
With the Bombay High Court ruling to shift 13 IPL matches out of drought-hit Maharashtra, the IPL league on Friday picked Bengaluru as the venue for its final and offered four alternate home options to the state’s affected franchises.
In Friday’s meeting, between IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla and representatives of the Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians, it was decided to allot IPL’s final and the first Qualifier to Bengaluru.
The two affected franchises were asked to pick from Raipur, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam and Kanpur as their alternate home base.
Petrol and Diesel prices cut
Petrol price was cut by Rs. 0.74 per litre and Diesel by Rs. 1.30, on Friday, reversing the 2-month trend of rising rates.
Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs. 61.13 per litre from midnight tonight as against Rs. 61.87 currently, said Indian Oil Corp (IOC), India’s largest fuel retailer.
Likewise, Diesel will cost Rs. 48.01 per litre compared to Rs. 49.31 at present.
Small stocks take big hit, lag behind blue-chips
The small fries of the stock market have taken a bigger hit compared to the blue-chips, with the small-cap index falling by 7.5 per cent so far this year.
The midcap index fell by 2 per cent to 10,916.30, whereas the losses were sharper for the small-cap index which tumbled 7.55 per cent to 10,943.02.
SEBI may review start-up listing norms very soon
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) may soon review its framework for listing of start-ups, including e-commerce firms, while incorporating suggestions from various stakeholders for a vibrant platform.
These norms have been put in place to encourage Indian start-ups and entrepreneurs to remain within the country rather than go abroad for funds.
Under the rules, start-ups can list on the separate ITP of stock exchanges such as BSE and NSE.
