6.9 magnitude Quake rocks Myanmar, tremors felt in India

A strong earthquake struck Myanmar on Wednesday. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

While the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has said the 6.9-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 135 kilometres, Germany’s Research Centre for Geosciences says the magnitude was 7.1.

The quake was centered in an area northwest of Mandalay, andtremors were felt in the eastern Indian states of Assam and West Bengal.

Three Indians get Gates Cambridge scholarship

Local indigenous people challenge Adani’s Australian coal mine project

Traditional owners of Queensland’s Galilee Basin in Australia challenged the leases granted to the controversial 20 billion dollar coal mine project of Adani, the Indian mining giant, on Wednesday.

Wangan and Jagalingou (W&J) representative group said in a statement,“The Queensland government issued the mine leases in the absence of the consent of the W&J people to Carmichael mine, and in the face of their three-time rejection of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with Adani,”.

Egypt will return Two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, after 66 years

Egypt will return two disputed Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia after controlling it for over 60 years in a bid to “restore” the rights of Saudis, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia agreed to maritime borders that handed ownership of disputed Red Sea islands Tiran and Sanafir over to Riyadh, Egyptian Cabinet said in a statement. The two islands of Saudi Arabia had been protected by Egypt from Israel since 1950.

19 passengers killed ina Pakistani bus accident

According to a rescue official, at least 19 passengers, including women and children, have been killed in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and truck in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province.

The official says several people were also injured in Wednesday’s accident near the city of Faisalabad in the Punjab province.


Supreme Court agrees to hear assets case against Mayawati

In a fresh setback to BSP chief Mayawati, the Supreme Court on Thursday admitted for hearing a disproportionate assets case against her. Ms. Mayawati termed the decision ‘politically motivated.’

The CBI also said both the Income Tax authorities and the Delhi High Court had already given the BSP chief a clean chit.The Bench said the plea claimed to have fresh material against Ms. Mayawati, and this should be looked into.

NACO will fund AIDS societies directly

In a huge shift from the Centre’s policy on financial decentralization,the Health Ministry has taken back control of the AIDS programme’s funding.

After a year of trying out routing money through State treasuries, the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) will once again route money directly to State-level AIDS societies from this month.

New J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba meets Modi

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday and discussed various state related issues especially the law and order situation.

During the meeting described as a courtesy call, Ms. Mehbooba, who assumed charge of the PDP-BJP government on April 4, informed the Prime Minister about her meetings with various Cabinet Ministers since Tuesday including that with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, official sources said.


Creo launches Mark 1 smartphone at Rs. 19,999

Bengaluru-based technology startup Creo introduced its Mark 1 smartphone priced at Rs. 19,999 on Wednesday.

Customers can buy Mark 1 from next week on the company’s website and Flipkart.

The handset comes with features like ‘Retriever’ that allows users to track their phones even after factory resetting and ‘Echo’, a voice-based answering machine system independent of carriers and devices.

Study finds Depression may compound diabetes risk

A study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry reports that Depression may increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes in people who already have metabolic diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels.

In the study involving four groups, the group with metabolic symptoms but not depression was around four times more likely to develop diabetes. But those with both depression and metabolic risk factorswere over six times more likely to develop diabetes.

BSNL soon to launch data sharing service for users pan India

BSNL today said it will soon implement its data sharing facility for pre-paid customers across India.

“This facility will be useful for sharing data among family members, friends and colleagues etc. This is also likely to attract the youth segment,” BSNL said in a statement.

No charges will be levied for availing this facility.

The Mumbai Indians routed home favourite Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets and five balls to spare at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 84 from just 54 ballsin a successful run chase that had Parthiv Patel scoring 23 and Jos Butler scoring 41, after KKR posted a challenging 187 for five.

Azlan Shah Cup: India loses to New Zealand 1-2

India lost 1-2 to defending champions New Zealand in their penultimate round-robin league match of the 25th Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh on Wednesday.

India can still ensure a place in the final against Australia if they defeat hosts Malaysia in the last round-robin league match on Friday. 

Shukla says Shifting matches will be a problem; working on alternate plan

After the Bombay High Court ordered shifting of 13 IPL matches from drought-hit Maharashtra, the IPL’s Chairman Rajeev Shukla on Wednesday said moving the games at this stage will be a “problem” but the BCCI is working on an “alternative plan”.

Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur are the three venues in Maharashtra scheduled to hold the IPL matches.

“Organising the IPL is a gigantic work. It’s not easy. All preparations had been done, completed. Now shifting the matches will be a problem,” Shukla said.


Gold prices fall as jewellers call off 42 day strike

Gold prices today dropped by Rs 200 to Rs 29,200 per 10 grams as the bullion market in New Delhireopened after an over six-week nationwide jewellers’ strike, while silver rallied by Rs 1,400 to Rs 38,200 per kg on speculative buying.

The market, which opened after 42 days of jewellers’ agitation against 1 per cent excise duty proposed on non-silver jewellery, witnessed restricted activity.It is estimated that the gems and jewellery industry have incurred over Rs 1 lakh crore loss due to the strike.

Sensex jumps 481 pts – reacheshighest level in 3 months

Market benchmark Sensex surged by 481 points today to 25,626.75 – its highest level in nearly three and a half months – led by gains in banking and auto stocks on forecast of an ‘above normal’ monsoon and positive macroeconomic data.

Markets will remain closed on Thursday and Friday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti and Ram Navmi, respectively.
