Teargas on used on migrants at Greek border

Hundreds of migrants were driven away from a border fence by Macedonian police used teargas on Sunday at a huge refugee camp of Idomeni on the Greek border, a Reuters witness said.

“The indiscriminate use of chemicals, rubber bullets and stun grenades against vulnerable populations… is a dangerous and deplorable act,” Greek government spokesman George Kyritsis said.

Angolan police disrupt anti-government protests

Several protesters were taken into custody by Angolan police in the capital Luanda after they tried to march in support of a group of activists jailed for planning a rebellion, witnesses said late on Saturday.

The witnesses said armed police rounded up the protesters who had gathered at Independence Garden to march in support of 17 activists sentenced last month for plotting against President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’s government.

Report says Belgian terror suspect was planning attack on U.K.

Belgian authorities arrested a suspected terrorist this week in connection with the attack on Brussels airport last month. Media reports say he was scouting for possible targets in the U.K. last year.

Mohamed Abrini, who has been described as the “man in the hat” airport bomber after his image was caught on CCTV at Brussels airport, had spent about a week in Britain in July 2015.

G7 countries meet in Hiroshima

Japan kicked off a G7 meeting in Hiroshimawith foreign ministersfrom the Group of Seven (G7) countries mainly for a call to end nuclear weapons.

70 years ago, During World War II, a U.S. warplane dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, reducing the city to ashes and killing 140,000 people by the end of that year. Nagasaki was bombed 3 days later.

Ministers will also discuss anti-terrorism steps, maritime security and issues related to North Korea, Ukraine and the Middle East.


Fireworks show in Kerala turns lethal, kills 107

In a shocking fireworks tragedy, 110 persons were killed and close to 400 injured, many of them grievously, on Sunday in Kollam, Kerala.

Disaster struck the crowd thronging the Puttingal Devi Temple at Paravur, south of Kollam, around 3.30 a.m. during fireworks show, when a spark fell on a vehicle carrying fireworks causing it to explode and damage buildings nearby.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled all his programmes and rushed to Kollam with a team of medical experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Nitish Kumar is the new JD (U) chief

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday was elected president of the Janata Dal (United), ending Sharad Yadav’s tenure as party chief for the last 10 years.

“Humbled by party’s trust in me. Will try my best to carry Sharad Yadav’s legacy forward and I accept the new role as president of JD (U),” Mr. Kumar tweeted after his election.

Anupam Kher barred from visiting NIT campus

The PDP-BJP government on Sunday stopped Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and film-maker Ashok Pandit amongst 40 people barred from reaching the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar to support protesting outstation students.

“Landed in Srinagar. Will go to meet the students and give them a warm hug and a special gift… I have been told by J&K police that I cannot enter Srinagar city at all,” Mr. Kher wrote on Twitter.

Campaign ends for round 2 of polling in West Bengal and Assam

The campaign for the second part of the first phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal on Monday ended in Kolkata on Saturday. Polling will be held in 31 constituencies.

There are total 163 candidates standing in the elections with 69,90,900 voters casting their vote across 8,465 polling stations.

The campaign ended in Assam with 61 of the 126 Assembly constituencies going to the polls in the second and final phase on Monday. The 1,04,35,271-strong electorate will decide the fate of 525 candidates.


Researchers’ conference on Gravitational Wave Astronomy

The first international conference on the subject of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy after the discovery of gravitational waves was announced, in February, was held recently at International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru.

The conference entitled “Future of Gravitational Wave Astronomy,” aimed at setting down future paths for gravitational wave researchers.It was preceded by a discussion meeting which was exclusively for experts in the field.

Activity equivalent calorie labeling to encourage healthy food choices

The Royal Society for Public Health has called for the introduction of “activity equivalent” calorie labeling. Instead of merely stating amount of caloriesin a food item, prominent pictorial icons should be placed alongside existing front-of-pack information, showing the minutes required to burn off the calories in the product.

“Giving consumers an immediate link between foods’ energy content and physical activity might help to reduce obesity,” Shirley Cramer, Chief Executive at the Royal Society of Public Health writes in The BMJ.

Expandable habitat on the International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) will for the first time be equipped with an expandable habitable structure that has the potential to revolutionise work on the orbital laboratory.

The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), will be delivered to the ISS by SpaceX’s Dragon capsule.

BEAM will arrive in Dragon’s unpressurised trunk and, after about five days, will be removed and attached to the station. Expansion is targeted for the end of May. The module will expand to roughly 10 feet in diametre.

KKR rode on Andre Russell and Brad Hogg’s fabulous bowling performance to bundle Delhi Daredevils out for a measly 98.

KKR openers Robin Uthappa (35, caught in 10th over), and Gautam Gambhir (38 not out) batted responsibly to add 69.KKR then raced to victory with 5.5 overs to spare on a hot Sunday night at Eden Gardens.

Sameer defeats brotherSourabh in finals

Sameer Verma is the new Men’s National badminton champion. He outplayed his brother Sourabh Verma with a 21-16, 21-16 victory.

For the record, Sourabh, winner of national championship 2012, and Sameer are now the only brothers to win the titles in 80 editions of the championship.

In the ladies final, P.C Thulasi outplayed top seed Tanvi Lad 21-9, 21-13 to clinch the women’s National championship.

Tamil Nadu Premier League to be a reality

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has finally decided to have a Twenty20 tournament of its own. The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), is likely to be held from last week of August to September, for a period of 14 to 20 days, and will feature eight teams.

The tournament will be conducted in Chennai and Natham in Dindigul, the only venues in the State with floodlights. There will be different franchises from cities such as Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, Dindigul and Tirunelveli.


India offers to invest $20 billion in Iran

Indian Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, has offered to invest $20 billion in Iran’s petrochemical, fertilizer and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities and in return sought cheap natural gas and land to set up the units.

Mr. Pradhan has requested Iran to allocate adequate land in the SEZ. He also urged Iran for a favourable treatment in the pricing of gas for India.

Poscorules out Odisha plant by July 2017

South Korean steelmaker POSCO on Friday told an Indian green court that it would not be able to set up a $12 billion steel plant in eastern Odisha state by July 2017, as the construction is yet to begin.

Regulatory hurdles have pushed back the project for more than a decade. The company has not been able to obtain forest and other clearances while its environmental clearance is valid until July 2017.

Fairfax investment to aid Sanmar’s Egypt expansion

Chennai-based Sanmar Group is keen on forging a long-term partnership with the Canada-based Fairfax. Asserting this, N. Sankar, Chairman, Sanmar Group, said, “they (Fairfax) are a good partner to work with.’’

Fairfax India Holdings Corporation said that it would invest $300 million in the Sanmar Chemicals Group (‘Sanmar’) through a combination of equity and fixed income securities.Mr. Vijay Sankar, Deputy Chairman of Sanmar Group, said the funds from Fairfax would largely go to expand the group’s operations in Egypt.
